Tada! Maralinga Tours 2020 dates are live

G’day there! to the Maralinga faithful.

Thanks for your wonderful support and the great feedback we have recieved over 2019. We have recieved lots of interest for 2020 already and Robin has reassured me that he is keen as mustard and looking forward to the next season, well at least he will be, after a well earned Summer break. The season is a pretty full-on thing for our tour guide, but his passion for Maralinga history is obvious to all that come and visit and the tour really is a work-in-progress.

Robin, Roger and Priscilla have been chipping away at getting the facilities at Maralinga village improved over the past year and we are all working to improve the experience for our guests.

This Friday will see how we go at the SA Tourism Awards, we’re proud enough that someone thought that we ought to be a nominee! Wish us luck!

Anyhow, if you have been waiting for a note saying that the tour dates are live, here it is.

How I would love to do this tour. After hearing about Maralinga for forty years of marriage to a man who spent six years of his life there as a young man, it would put everything into place! Are there any tours from Adelaide? How do you hire a ‘plane! I think it would be foolish for me to drive from Perth! Best of luck for the upcoming awards. Judy

Hi Judith. That’s the one, you can get commercial flights to Ceduna from Adelaide. China Air will bring you to Maralinga from Ceduna for the day.

    Hello Tim,
it’s great to see that everything is going well! (I’ve been hearing positive things from the veterans ?)

Our exhibition here in the UK is going well, it shows off loads of items from Montebello, Emu and Maralinga. (I will have to sort out copies of the photos for you but due to size and amount it would probably need to be sent on a USB stick)
Already looking at touring the show next year.

I’m still planning on coming over at some point soon but will be in contact about that when I know more.

    Good luck with the award!
    Wes

    Can you take a caravan?

Hi Glenda, sure, off-road vans or semi-off-road is the best. But if you have dirt road experience and are not too worried by corrugations and a bit of rocky ground, you can get in OK.

        Tim.
Travelling up to Alice next year and we are interested in the tour. Have an off road van. Can we access Maralinga from the Stuart Highway or can it only be accessed from the Eyre Highway.

The track from Emu to Maralinga is definitely closed. However, you can access from the north, but only via Volkes Hill on the Anne Beadell Highway, down the Cook Road to the Lake Dey-Dey Road which takes you past Oak Valley and south-east to Maralinga. – From Coober Pedy this is (very) roughly 720km. You’ll will need an additional permit, though the cost is included in the tour price.

Thanks Tim. Would be a great trip but a bit too adventurous by ourselves this time.
Will consider the southern access from the Eyre Highway maybe next year.
